OKBET ASIA : Sergio Perez – High heat and extreme humidity greet the drivers at the Singapore Grand Prix, making it the longest race of the season and one of the most physically demanding.

Their physical burdens would have been less on Sunday thanks to the rain, since slower cornering speeds and lessened strain and stress on the body are benefits of a wet course. But it would have been significantly more psychologically taxing on the drivers, who were already on the edge of their seats for the whole two-hour race as conditions changed at a dizzying rate.

As if it weren’t bad enough, the long rain delay messed up their plans as well. When the cars finally struck the circuit, it was evident that the intermediates were the way to go, making the complete wets unnecessary; this indicated that the race might have begun earlier if it hadn’t been delayed so long.

It’s likely that the drivers and team members had to maintain their cool, eat properly, and remain focused on the task at hand for an extended period of time. Grand Prix weekends tend to follow a predictable pattern. Their driver schedules are very regimented, down to the minute details of when and where each driver must be at certain times during the day for various obligations. Being unprepared for delays might cause you to lose concentration.

It wasn’t immediately clear that many drivers were having trouble, but as the race progressed, errors began to appear, starting with drivers like Yuki Tsunoda, who looked to be nearing mental exhaustion early on by demanding at his engineer to stop talking on the radio.

Then, even Lewis Hamilton had a moment of distraction that led to a crash, on a day when it was very simple to make mistakes due to the high pressure.

What this does best is emphasize the outstanding performances of the top two drivers, race winner Sergio Perez and his closest rival, Charles Leclerc.

This was a fantastic win for Perez, easily his finest in Formula 1, even though it was determined in the stewards’ chamber after the race for his Safety Car infractions. To be fair, he did regularly lose more than ten car lengths to the Safety Car while the lights were still on, so he may need to review the regulations in that regard. But it doesn’t diminish Checo’s incredible showing on the track.

Getting the jump on the competition was essential, and drivers who started on the inside of the racing line had a substantial advantage. This is because the racing line, already slick in the rain, now has additional rubber on it.

While Leclerc and Perez’s response times were equal, and Perez’s start wasn’t great in the beginning, he did manage to apply the proper amount of throttle on a little higher grip surface, which gave him the advantage going into Turn 1.

Throughout the entire Grand Prix, the top two drivers set a pace that no one else could match. Even though Carlos Sainz was painfully sluggish throughout, he managed to keep Lewis Hamilton from relaxing too much by keeping Max Verstappen stuck in traffic for the whole of the Grand Prix.

Even when the entire Safety Car twice erased their sizable lead, the ease with which the lead fight could spread away from Sainz demonstrated the quality of their driving. True on inters in the rain, the mud, and the slicks, too; they were the best of the best and gave us a spectacular show every time.

Leclerc also deserves a lot of credit for how motivated he has been. He stated he had to dig deep to continually harass the race leader and attempt to make a mistake, and he did just that by pushing Perez to the limit in the last stint.

With Leclerc sniffing at his gearbox, it seemed certain when Perez had a pair of lock-ups into Turn 14. However, Charles was so close to the edge that his errors weren’t far away, either, enabling Checo to extend his legs and cruise to victory by more than the required five seconds.

The automobile control demonstration was a highlight of this exciting quest. Perhaps in drier conditions Leclerc would have dared to make a move on Norris and Hamilton would have dared to try and pass Vettel late in the race, but the trade-off between risk and reward is always precarious.

Finally, Leclerc drained his tires and himself dry, falling to second place behind the ecstatic race winner.

Along with his prior victories in Baku and Monaco, Perez added a victory in Singapore to his Red Bull tally for the year. His lone pole position came in Jeddah. We knew he was good on street courses, but his last effort completely backed up his reputation.

The hardest part about racing for me was doing so on a street circuit, where you can’t afford to let your guard down. Just when he was beginning to feel the heat for his lack of podium finishes while Verstappen has been making them look simple, a terrific street performance and a victory from Perez would do him the world of good.

He had to show Red Bull that he could perform adequately in Max’s absence, and he did it convincingly in Singapore.
