Frede Rasmussen, driving for Oracle Red Bull Racing Esports, won for the first time on Friday night at Silverstone. After a shaky beginning, the Dane finally got his 2022 F1 Esports Series Pro Championship up and running by winning the third race of the initial event.

He made an uncommon error in the first race in Bahrain, earning a penalty, and then he was stopped in the line of drivers trying to overtake the leader in Imola. Still, he let nothing or no one get in his way at Silverstone, and he beat off the always excellent Thomas Ronhaar to the finish.

After fending off late pressure from defending champion Jarno Opmeer, Lucas Blakeley won decisively in Bahrain, while teammate Bari Boroumand finished third to give McLaren Shadow its first double-podium finish in F1 Esports.

On Thursday, the Blakeley Train roared into Imola, and he came out on top, extending his flawless start by beating off Red Bull’s Marcel Kiefer and Michael Rasmussen.

Some unexpected things happened during qualifying at Silverstone, with Thursday’s runner-up Marcel Kiefer being eliminated in the first round. Blakeley, Ronhaar, and Rasmussen, the usual suspects, all did well, while Opmeer could only manage ninth place. Rasmussen placed it on the pole, while AlphaTauri’s Sebastian Job, a member of the Red Bull family, and Ronhaar followed closely after.

After falling behind at the beginning of the previous two races, Ronhaar made up ground on Job via Abbey and then settled in behind Rasmussen for the most of the opening laps. Opmeer, seeing no way around it, opted for a counter-strategy by switching to Hard tires on Lap 10 and driving on them for the remaining 26 laps of the race.

The leaders Blakeley (P4) and Longuet (P5) came in to swap for the Mediums two laps later, but when they came out, they were ahead of Opmeer. The defending champion lost after betting on a tyre disparity, much as Ferrari did five days earlier at Monza.

Rasmussen and Ronhaar, the race’s frontrunners, came in together during pit stops and kept their lead when the order was reset. Job came up on the losing end of this situation, falling to fourth place as Blakeley ascended to the top three.

Opmeer’s plan had him in seventh place, but on the penultimate lap he passed Nicolas Longuet and Brendon Leigh to move up to fifth.

After a thrilling race, Rasmussen calmly took the checkered flag to claim his eleventh victory in F1 Esports, finishing ahead of Ronhaar, Blakeley, and Job. Opmeer was gratified to place fifth, after Longuet and Leigh. Final podium spots went to season debutants Patrik Sipos (Alpine), Fabrizio Donoso (Ferrari), and Luke Smith (Alpine).

Based on the results of the first competition, Lucas Blakeley has established himself as the clear leader, with a 21-point lead over Rasmussen in second. Ronhaar, after a spectacular debut, is in third place, ahead of two-time winner Opmeer and Boroumand.

The scenario is much the same in the team rankings, as McLaren Shadow is now in first place thanks to three straight podium finishes by Blakeley. Red Bull Racing Esports and Mercedes-AMG F1 Esports Team have some distance to make up after a couple of disappointing races, but Haas is right there with them, having already scored more points than they did in all of 2021!

At our next meeting in four weeks, we’ll have three more rounds of racing. European tripleheader action featuring Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands kicks off on Wednesday, October 12. We’ll see you then!
